How can we help you?

Getting Started

Who is Genomes.io?
Chevron icon

Genomes.io is a genomic data security company co-founded by Dr Mark Hahnel and Aldo de Pape in 2018. We are a UK-registered company and operate from London, UK.

How is Genomes.io different from its competitors?
chevron icon

We are different from our competitors in three major ways:
1. You own your data: We harness industry-leading security and privacy technologies to give you full ownership and total control over your DNA data. We secure your data but cannot even access it ourselves. Therefore, you don’t even need to trust us with your data. You can choose to anonymously contribute your data to scientific and medical research and get paid, without ever losing control of your data. No other company gives you full security and true ownership of your genomic data in your DNA Vault, and full control from your mobile device.
2. Technology partnerships: We are able to work as a complementary security technology layer on top of many large organisations’ current processes, including DNA sequencing companies, DNA testing companies, population sequencing initiatives, rare disease patient organisations, healthcare providers and pharmaceutical companies.
3. Whole genome sequencing: We provide access to the ‘gold standard’ of genome sequencing - clinical grade 30x whole genome sequencing, wherever you are in the world. This next-generation technology reads all 3 billion letters in your genome 30 times before being uploaded into your DNA Vault, to produce much more accurate and reliable data. Most of our competitors use outdated technologies that only capture a tiny percentage of your genetic information. We give you access to, control over and ability to earn from 100% your genome.

What is a genome?

Your genome is the instructions for making and maintaining you. It is written in a chemical code called DNA. All living things have a genome; plants, bacteria, viruses and animals. Your genome is all 3.2 billion letters of your DNA. It contains around 20,000 genes. Genes are the instructions for making the proteins our bodies are built of – from the keratin in hair and fingernails to the antibody proteins that fight infection. Genes make up about 1-5% of your genome. The rest of the DNA, between the genes, used to be called ‘junk’ DNA. It wasn’t thought to be important. But we now know that DNA between genes is important for regulating the genes and the genome. For example, it can switch genes on and off at the right time. There is still much more to learn about what it all does.Completion of the Human Genome Project’s efforts to sequence the first human genome was announced in 2004. This project cost ~$3 billion USD and took 15 years of vast international collaboration. In 2019, this process can now be achieved for less than $1000, in just a few hours.

Why share my genomic data?

If data is the new gold, then genomic data can be considered platinum to the life sciences industry. Genomic data already has enormous potential to re-shape drug discovery and development by leading the drive to personalised medicine. Genomic data is increasingly valuable to pharmaceutical companies allowing for:
Patient population stratification: Identifying and stratifying patient populations based on risk of disease progression.
Clinical trial optimisation: Analysis of genomic data enabling enhanced feasibility studies to inform key decision parameters for clinical trial development.
Biomarker development: Discovery of novel drug candidates through analysis of genetic biomarkers associated with disease phenotypes.
Companion diagnostic development: Use of genomic data to develop companion diagnostics that determine which patient should receive what medication at what dosage.
Drug repurposing and repositioning: Generating evidence to support extended applications of combination therapies with new or existing drug molecules through identification of causal relationship between gene profiles and therapeutic effect.Genomic data is also increasingly valuable to healthcare providers. Using a patient’s genomic profile, healthcare can truly transition from a “one size fits all” approach to an individual’s genome becoming the centrepiece of a cost-effective and tailored treatment regimen that delivers optimal patient outcomes. This confers considerable clinical value by allowing:Risk stratification: Using patient’s genetic profiles to assess common disease risk (e.g. type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease or age-related macular degeneration) allowing for better clinical management, such as increasing disease-specific clinical exams like mental status or eye exams.
Motivation of patient behaviour change: The use of genomic testing for counseling patient behavior change has been evaluated in randomised clinical trials. It reported that 45% reported that genomic testing would motivate patients to adopt healthier behaviors.
Drug selection: Pharmacogenetics, the use of genetic testing to guide drug treatment choices, may be the most anticipated application of personalised medicine. For certain medications in more widespread use, common genetic variation is associated with efficacy or risk of adverse effects, either of which might be used to tailor drug therapy.By sharing and utilising this new dataset, we see the beginning of the shift from reactive to preventative medicine that allows for more cost-effective and efficient population health management.

Services & Solutions

Individual Services
What does Genomes.io offer the general public?

We offer our the general public access to clinical quality 30x whole genome sequencing, personalised genomic reports based on this data, and secure data storage in their personal DNA Vault. Using the Genomes mobile app, our users control third-party access to their DNA Vault and get paid for contributing data to research, without ever losing privacy or giving up ownership of their genome.

What information can be ‘read’ from my genome?

Following DNA sequencing, your raw genomic data FASTQ file is subjected to secondary analysis in a series of steps to generate a VCF (variant call format) file. It is a standardized text file format for representing SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism), indels (insertion/deletions), and structural variation calls, from which information can be extracted and converted into easily understandable genomic reports. Notable insights derived from this data include:Ancestry: DNA variants occur at different frequencies in different places across the world and every maker has its own pattern of geographical distribution. A DNA ancestry algorithm can combine information about these patterns with the unique set of DNA alleles in your genome to estimate your genetic ancestry.

Traits and Wellness: Certain traits are genetically linked, meaning your genetics make you more or less likely to express certain traits. These can include earwax type, eye colour, fear of heights, alcohol flush reaction, lactose intolerance and even muscle composition. These are based around published scientific literature supporting an association between particular genetic markers and a trait. The version of DNA you have at that genetic marker (your genotype) can impact which version of the trait you are more likely to have.

Health risks: There are certain genetic variants that increase your risk of developing certain health conditions. Some of these include Parkinson’s disease, celiac disease, late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, certain breast cancers and age-related macular degeneration. Other factors also affect the chances of developing these conditions (e.g. lifestyle, environment, family history), therefore these tests do not diagnose health conditions, but the results can be used during discussion with healthcare professionals.

Carrier status: Certain genetic variants may not directly affect your health but could affect the health of your future family in the form of inherited/hereditary disease. If one of these variants are present in both your and your partner's genome (you are both “carriers”), then your children will have a percentage chance of expressing the condition. E.g. If both parents are carriers for cystic fibrosis (CF), there is a 25% chance that the child will have CF. Understanding your carrier status can help you work with your doctor to prepare for the health of your future family.

Pharmacogenomic Report: Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect a person's response to drugs. Certain genetic variants influence the pharmacokinetic (drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination) and pharmacodynamic effects of certain drugs (effects mediated through a drug's biological targets), including Warfarin, Cisplatin, Simvastatin and Abacavir, as well as general drugs like Aspirin. Most drugs are currently available are "one size fits all," but they don't work the same way for everyone. However, using an individual's genotype to explain or predict a patient’s response or lack thereof to a treatment, allows for better treatment outcomes, greater efficacy, minimization of the occurrence of drug toxicities and adverse drug reactions.

Over $3 billion USD is spent annually on genetic research and every day new insights are uncovered that identify new genotype-phenotype relationships. We are still at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to understanding what exactly our genome can tell us.

Why trust Genomes.io with my DNA?

Strictly speaking you don’t have to. We harness the cutting edge data security and privacy-preserving technologies that means no one, not even Genomes.io as a technology provider, is able to access our user DNA Vaults. This is achieved by providing users with their own secure encrypted cloud storage environment and a private access key stored only on their mobile device. In our model, you actually own sensitive genomic data, decide who has private access to it for what price, and can be sure it is stored an d shared exactly how you decide.

Why protect my genomic data?

Accessing and sharing genomic data is a crucial step toward realizing a future of personalised medicine. However, at Genomes.io, we firmly believe that this dataset must be managed responsibly. Your genome is the biological blueprint that defines who you are. It is:
Personally identifiable: You and biological family members can be re-identified from ‘anonymised’ and ‘de-identified’ genomic data.
Highly sensitive: Your genome contains much more information about you than you know about yourself, potentially revealing details you may not want others to know.
Increasingly valuable: To pharmaceutical/biotechnology companies, healthcare providers, but also malicious actors such as hackers. We believe the best way to allow scientific and medical progress via genomic data sharing, while protecting individuals' most valuable piece of personal information, is to put control back in the hands of the individual. Using Genomes.io technology, individuals never lose security, privacy or ownership of their genomic data while powering the personalised medicine future.

Cookie Policy

This cookie policy explains what cookies are and how Genomes.io (“Genomes.io, we, us”) uses cookies and similar technologies to operate our websites and Services and to help collect data.
We encourage you to read the full policy in conjunction with our Privacy Policy so that you can understand what information is collected using cookies and how we use that information.

What are cookies?
Most websites you visit use cookies to improve your online experience. For the same reasons, so do we. Cookies are text files, containing small amounts of information, stored in your browsing device or on your hard drive when you visit our website or Services. These cookies can then be recalled by a web server in the same domain that placed the cookie. Doing so allows us to differentiate between you and all our other visitors.
Generally, there are two types of cookies: session cookies and persistent cookies. A session cookie lasts while you leave your browser open, but is deleted when you close your browser. It’s easiest to think of session cookies as a website’s short-term memory which allows our site to recognize you as you move from page to page within our domain.
A persistent cookie however lasts until you, or your browser settings, delete the cookie or the cookie itself expires. Without persistent cookies, the site would not be able to remember your preferences like your menu settings, language selection and other information that is useful in storing between sessions.
In addition, there are third-party cookies not owned by Genomes.io but are instead placed on your browsing device through our website. The parties that set third-party cookies can recognize your computer both when it visits Genomes.io or other certain websites or apps. Genomes.io has no control over third-party cookies. You should check any third-party’s website for more information on how they use cookies.

What are Web Beacons?
Our web pages may also contain electronic images known as web beacons (also called single-pixel gifs) that we use to help deliver cookies on our websites, count users who have visited those websites, and gather usage and performance data. We also include web beacons in our promotional email messages or newsletters to determine whether you open and act on them.

Why do we use cookies?
Cookies serve a lot of different purposes. For the most part, we use cookies to store your preferences and settings, enable you to sign-in, combat fraud, analyze how our products perform, analytics, marketing, interest-based advertising, and fulfill other legitimate purposes.
To help you better understand some of the ways we use cookies, we’ve put together this detailed table:

Third-party Advertising and Analytics Tracking
Our websites may include web beacons and cookies from third-party service providers. In some cases, that is because we have hired the third party to provide services on our behalf, such as site analytics. In other cases, it is because our web pages contain web beacons used to track interaction with and effectiveness of content (such as videos, news content) and ads from third parties. Because your browser connects to those third parties' web servers to retrieve that content, those third parties are able to set or read their own cookies on your device and may collect information about your online activities over time and across different websites or online services.
